What we do
Renault Gearbox and Transmission Repair
Most gearboxes fail slowly and give plenty of warning. A shift that has changed character is worth reading before it becomes a rebuild, because the difference in cost is large.
Read MoreShow Less
Transmission Diagnosis
Adaptation values and fault memory read with CLIP, plus a road test with live data.
Fluid and Filter Service
The single thing that most extends a modern automatic, and it is not lifetime fill.
Mechatronic and Valve Body Work
Repair or replacement where the fault is hydraulic control rather than mechanical wear.
Clutch Replacement
Manual, dual-clutch and automated manual, matched to the gearbox type.
Torque Converter Repair
Lock-up shudder traced properly instead of masked with an additive.
Solenoid and Sensor Replacement
Individual components replaced where a full unit is not warranted.
Seal and Leak Repair
Pan gaskets, sleeves and output seals, which is where most fluid loss starts.
Gearbox Rebuild
Stripped, measured and rebuilt where the wear is internal.
Transfer Case and Differential
Four-wheel-drive components serviced with the gearbox rather than after it.
Adaptation Reset
Relearned after the work, so the gearbox shifts to its new condition rather than its old one.
What we see on these cars
Known Renault Gearbox Faults We See
Three different automatics across this range, and the continuously variable one is the least understood and the most sensitive to heat.
CVT Fluid and Heat
The continuously variable transmission depends entirely on its fluid, and heat degrades it. It is not a lifetime fill despite how it is described.
CVT Behaviour Is Not a Fault
Engine speed rising without a step change is how a CVT works. Shuddering, slipping or a delay in taking up drive is not, and that difference is worth knowing.
Dual Clutch Wear and Mechatronics
On the models with a dual clutch, judder on pull-away is clutch condition or lost adaptation, and adaptation is resettable.
Correct Fluid Specification
Each of these gearboxes takes its own fluid, and a generic fill produces shift complaints that were not there before.
Manual Clutch and Linkage
On the manuals, a vague shift is often linkage rather than the gearbox, and far cheaper to correct.
Adaptation After Repair
Reset with CLIP so the gearbox operates to its current condition.
How it works
How Renault Gearbox Work Runs
Four stages, and the road test comes before the quote as well as after the work.
1. Road Test and Scan
The fault reproduced with live data recording, then the fault memory and adaptation values read.
2. Written Quote
Service, repair or rebuild, with the reasoning and the cost, before anything comes apart.
3. The Work
Carried out to the manufacturer procedure, with the correct fluid specification.
4. Adaptation and Road Test
Values reset and the car driven, so the shift quality is confirmed on the road.
Why owners pick us
What You Get Back
Shift Quality
Changes that are smooth and predictable rather than harsh or late.
A Longer Gearbox Life
Fluid and filter at sensible intervals is the cheapest transmission work there is.
The Right Repair
A mechatronic fault fixed as a mechatronic fault, not as a rebuild.
Correct Fluid
Specification matched to the gearbox, which modern units are strict about.
Adaptation Reset
Relearned after the work, so the box shifts to its current condition.
A Quote First
Nothing is opened before you have agreed to the cost.

Warning signs
When a Renault Gearbox Needs Attention
A gearbox rarely fails without warning. Acting on the warning is the difference between a service and a rebuild.
Harsh or Delayed Shifts
A change that thumps, or a pause before the car moves.
Slipping
Engine speed rising without the car accelerating with it.
Shudder at Light Throttle
Usually torque converter lock-up, and usually fixable early.
Warning Light or Limp Mode
The gearbox protecting itself, with a stored code explaining why.
Red or Burnt Fluid
Fluid should not smell burnt, and colour is a reliable tell.
Noise in Neutral
A whine or rumble that changes with engine speed.
Fluid Under the Car
A leak drops the level, and level is what a gearbox runs on.
Juddering on Pull-Away
On a dual-clutch car, usually clutch wear or an adaptation fault.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Transmission Fluid Really Lifetime Fill?
It is described that way and it does not behave that way, particularly in this climate. Heat is what degrades automatic transmission fluid, and Abu Dhabi supplies plenty of it. A fluid and filter service at a sensible interval is the cheapest transmission work you will ever buy.
Can a Slipping Gearbox Be Repaired Without a Rebuild?
Sometimes. Slipping from low fluid, a failed solenoid or a mechatronic fault is a repair. Slipping from worn clutch packs is not. The scan and road test tell us which before we quote.
What Is a Mechatronic Unit?
The hydraulic and electronic control assembly inside a modern automatic. A large share of gearbox faults are in there rather than in the gears, which matters because it is repairable at a fraction of a rebuild.
Why Does Adaptation Need Resetting?
The gearbox learns to compensate for wear. Leave the old values after a repair and it keeps shifting for the condition it used to be in, which feels wrong and shortens the life of the new parts.
Do You Rebuild Gearboxes or Only Replace Them?
Both, and which one we recommend depends on the unit and what is worn. A rebuild is worth it on a gearbox worth rebuilding; on some units a good exchange unit is better value, and we will say so.
Does a CVT Need Its Fluid Changed?
Yes, and it matters more here than almost anywhere. A CVT transmits drive through a belt or chain squeezed by fluid pressure, so the fluid is doing mechanical work rather than only lubricating. Heat degrades it, this climate provides plenty, and a neglected CVT is expensive in a way a serviced one is not.
