What a Headlight Actually Is
Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate rather than glass: lighter, far more impact resistant and much cheaper to produce in complex shapes.
Polycarbonate has one significant weakness. Ultraviolet light degrades it, turning it yellow and cloudy.
So manufacturers apply a hard UV-resistant coating to the outer surface. That coating, not the plastic, is what keeps a headlight clear.
Over years of sun the coating itself degrades, and that is what you are seeing when a headlight yellows. The plastic underneath is usually still fine.
Why Compound Works
Rubbing compound is an abrasive. Used on a yellowed headlight it removes the degraded coating along with the oxidised surface layer of plastic beneath it.
What is left is fresh, clear polycarbonate, which is why the result can look dramatic in twenty minutes.
The result is genuine. You have not hidden anything, you have removed the damaged material.
Why It Then Fails
The factory coating you just removed was the only UV protection on that lens, and compound does not replace it.
Bare polycarbonate in Abu Dhabi sun degrades quickly. Expect the yellowing to return within months rather than years.
It also comes back worse, because now there is no protection at all rather than a degraded one.
Each time you compound it, more material is removed, and the lens gets thinner and slightly less optically true.
This is why headlight restoration has a reputation for not lasting. It is not that the polishing is wrong. It is that almost everybody stops before the step that makes it permanent.
The Step That Makes It Last
After polishing, the lens has to be sealed with something that provides UV protection.
- A dedicated UV-resistant headlight sealant or clear coat. The proper answer, and what a restoration service applies.
- Automotive clear coat, applied thinly and evenly. Effective and needs care to avoid runs and orange peel.
- A ceramic coating rated for plastics, which provides real UV resistance and easier cleaning.
What does not work as a substitute: wax, plastic polish or general-purpose protectant. They add gloss and no meaningful UV barrier, and they wash off.
A sealed restoration lasts years. An unsealed one lasts a season, and that is the entire difference.
Doing It Properly
- Clean and mask around the lens. Compound on paint or trim causes its own problems.
- Wet sand if the yellowing is heavy, working through progressively finer grades. Heavy oxidation does not respond to compound alone.
- Compound to clarity, by hand or machine, keeping the surface wet and cool.
- Refine with a finer polish to remove the compound haze.
- Clean thoroughly with alcohol so nothing is left on the surface to stop the sealant bonding.
- Apply the UV sealant evenly and let it cure fully.
Step five is skipped often and it decides whether the coating bonds at all.
When It Is Not Worth Doing
- Cracking or crazing in the lens itself, which is damage to the plastic rather than the coating.
- Moisture inside the unit, which is a seal failure and will keep the inside dirty regardless.
- Internal reflector damage, where the silvering has degraded. No amount of lens polishing helps.
- Yellowing on the inside surface, which polishing cannot reach.
Condensation inside a headlight is worth checking before starting. If the unit is not sealed, restoring the outside achieves very little.

A yellowed lens scatters light rather than directing it, which reduces how far you can see and puts glare where the beam pattern was designed not to.
