Automatic Gearbox Problems: What Each Symptom Means
Gearbox faults are frightening because the repairs have a reputation. In practice a good share of what arrives here as a failing transmission turns out to be fluid, adaptation or a solenoid, and telling those apart early is what keeps it that way.

Slipping: The One That Matters Most
The engine revs rise but the car does not accelerate to match. It can feel like the clutch slipping on a manual.
This means drive is not being fully transmitted, and it is the symptom least worth waiting on. Slipping generates heat, heat degrades fluid, and degraded fluid causes more slipping.

Shudder or Vibration at Steady Speed
A fine shimmer at light throttle, often around 60 to 80 km/h, frequently described as driving over a rumble strip.
This is usually the torque converter lock-up clutch beginning to slip, and it is one of the best documented transmission complaints there is.
Caught early it is often resolved by a correct fluid service with the right specification. Left alone it becomes a mechanical repair.
On several modern gearboxes this exact shudder has a known fluid remedy, and the updated specification exists precisely because of it. Filling with the wrong fluid puts the complaint straight back, which is why the specification is not a detail.
Harsh or Jerky Shifts
A change that arrives as a thump rather than a transition.
Often not mechanical
- Lost adaptation. Gearboxes learn how their components behave. After a battery change or a repair, that learning can be wrong until reset.
- Solenoid faults. These report specifically, so a gearbox is not condemned on a symptom.
- Software. Some gearboxes have documented shift quality complaints addressed by control software rather than parts.
- Fluid condition. Degraded fluid changes how quickly clutches apply.
A gearbox that shifts poorly is not automatically a gearbox that is failing, and that distinction is worth a diagnostic before it is worth a rebuild.
A Delay Taking Up Drive
You select drive or reverse and there is a pause, sometimes a second or more, before the car moves.
This usually points at fluid level or pressure: a low level, a worn pump, or a valve body not holding pressure.
It tends to be worse when cold and improve as the gearbox warms, which is a useful detail to mention when booking.
Noises
- Whining that rises with road speed. Often a bearing, or on a CVT the belt and pulleys.
- Clunk when engaging drive or reverse. Frequently a mount or a driveshaft joint rather than the gearbox, and much cheaper.
- Grinding. Uncommon on an automatic and worth stopping for.
- A hum only in one gear. Points at a specific gear set.
Mounts are worth mentioning separately: a worn gearbox mount transmits shift shock into the cabin and gets blamed on the gearbox constantly.
Warning Lights and Limp Mode
A gearbox that detects a fault protects itself by locking into a single gear, usually third, and refusing to shift.
That is the car preventing damage rather than the gearbox failing, and it is stored with the conditions that caused it.

What the Fluid Tells You
If your gearbox has a dipstick, the fluid is genuinely informative.
- Bright red and clear. Healthy.
- Darker red or light brown. Aged. Due a service.
- Dark brown or black. Heat-degraded. Overdue.
- Smells burnt. Heat has already caused damage.
- Milky. Coolant contamination, usually from the transmission cooler in the radiator. Urgent.

The gap between a fluid service and a rebuild is enormous, and where you land in it depends heavily on when you come in.
