A car stuck in one gear is usually the gearbox protecting itself rather than the gearbox failing. Knowing that changes what you do in the next ten minutes, and what you do next matters more than the fault itself.

What Limp Mode Is
When a gearbox control unit detects something outside safe limits, it stops trying to shift and locks into a single ratio, usually third.
Third is chosen because it lets the car move and be steered without asking much of the gearbox. You will have limited speed, no kickdown and often a warning light.
This is deliberate engineering. The gearbox has decided that continuing to shift risks damage, so it has stopped.
That is genuinely good news relative to the alternative: the car is protecting a component it thinks is at risk.
What to Do in the Next Ten Minutes
- Get somewhere safe. The car will move in limp mode, just slowly.
- Switch off completely and wait a minute. Not a quick restart, a proper shutdown.
- Start again and see whether it shifts. If the trigger was momentary, the fault may not reappear.
- If it drives normally, drive it straight to a workshop. Do not treat it as fixed. The code is stored and needs reading.
- If it returns immediately, stop. Repeating the cycle achieves nothing and may add heat.
Try the restart once. If limp mode returns straight away, the fault is present rather than momentary, and repeatedly restarting to get home risks turning a protected gearbox into a damaged one.
The Two Checks Worth Doing

Low fluid is one of the more common triggers, and it is the one thing you can reasonably check yourself.
Most automatics are checked with the engine running, warm, in park, on level ground, which is different from checking engine oil. The dipstick usually says which.

Look underneath
A reddish patch under the middle of the car points at a transmission leak, which explains a low level and possibly the fault.
That single observation is genuinely useful information to bring in with you.
What Usually Causes It
- Low or degraded fluid. Pressure drops and the gearbox cannot complete a shift.
- A speed or range sensor fault. The control unit loses a signal it needs and stops shifting.
- Solenoid or valve body faults. The mechanism that directs pressure fails.
- Overheating. Common here, particularly towing or in sustained traffic.
- Low system voltage. A weak battery causes control units to behave oddly, and this is more common than people expect.
- Wiring or connector faults. Heat and vibration take their toll over years.
Several of those are inexpensive. That is worth holding on to before assuming the worst.
What Not to Do
- Do not keep driving in limp mode to complete your week. It is designed to get you off the road, not to be a mode you live in.
- Do not disconnect the battery to clear the light. That erases the stored data that would have diagnosed it, and the fault returns.
- Do not add transmission additives. They do not fix a sensor, a solenoid or a leak.
- Do not top up with the wrong fluid. Automatic fluids are not interchangeable and the wrong one causes its own problems.
What Happens at the Workshop
- Read the stored codes and the freeze frame, which shows the conditions when it triggered.
- Check fluid level and condition. Colour and smell tell us a great deal.
- Check system voltage, because a weak battery causes gearbox faults surprisingly often.
