How to Check Automatic Transmission Fluid Level

How to Check Automatic Transmission Fluid Level

To check your automatic transmission fluid level, park on a level surface, keep the engine running, and pull out the transmission dipstick to inspect the fluid. Ensure the fluid is at the correct mark and is clean, reddish, and free of any burnt smell.

Modern cars often include automatic transmissions. They allow you to drive without jerking or stumbling. Regularly inspecting the transmission fluid helps the car work well for longer. It allows the gears in the gearbox to change smoothly and helps keep the transmission cool and free of dirt. Our goal at Exotic Auto Services is to show you easy and environmentally friendly ways to look after your car. Hence, it lasts longer and drives smoothly.

Why Transmission Fluid Matters

Transmission fluid is like the lifeblood of your automatic gearbox. It:

  • Lubricates moving parts
  • Helps with gear shifting
  • Keeps the system cool
  • Protects the transmission from wear and tear

If your fluid level is too low or the fluid is dirty, it can cause serious problems. You may face poor gear response, engine strain, or costly repairs like a complete Gearbox Repair.

Signs You Need to Check the Fluid

Here are some common signs that it’s time to check your transmission fluid:

  • Gears are slipping
  • Delayed or rough gear shifts
  • Unusual noises when driving
  • A burning smell
  • Fluid leaking under the car

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait. Checking the fluid is easy and can save you from expensive damage.

Step-by-Step: How to Check the Fluid Level

Step 1: Turn on the Car and Let It Warm Up

Please turn on your car and let it run for 5 to 10 minutes. Check that the temperature is as intended. When fluid is warm, it expands, so checking the fluid level at this point gives the correct reading.

Step 2: Find an area to park where the ground is not sloping

The best way to park your car on a level surface. Braking with the handbrake is safer than using the standard brakes.

Step 3:  Drive your car with the engine still running

Some automatic transmissions should have their fluid checked while the engine is on and the car is placed in Park (P) or Neutral (N). Start by looking at what the owner’s manual says.

Step 4: Find the dipstick.

Open the hood and check for where the transmission fluid dipstick is. There is usually a pull cord at the back near the engine, and it may be red, yellow or orange. If you aren’t sure, contact Exotic Auto Services, as their workers are experts who know every system well.

Step 5:  Pull out the dipstick in order to check the oil level

Take out the dipstick, clean it with a lint-free cloth and put it back all the way in the tube. Take the car out for another drive and check the oil level when it is finished.

Step 6: Check Fluid Condition

The fluid ought to be clean, have a pink or red color and smell fresh. If your car appears dirty, looks dark or smells burnt, think about taking it in for Car Service or maybe a Transmission Fluid Change.

Step 7: Add Fluid If Needed

To finish, add fluid such as oil or an antifreeze mixture.

If you find that the fluid is low, add the proper kind of transmission fluid through the dipstick tube using a funnel. Do not overfill. Getting a lot of fluids can be harmful, too.

How Often Should You Check It?

Many automakers advise having the fluid checked around every 30,000 to 60,000 kilometres. Yet, because it is very hot in Abu Dhabi, inspecting cars more often is useful. Heat speeds up the breakdown of fluid, especially if you use your car a lot for towing or moving heavy loads. Routine Oil Changes and fluid checks in your car help it stay on the road for a longer time.

Remember to Look For Leaks

A transmission problem that happens frequently is fluid leaking. Red or brown spots below your car indicate that you should see an expert. A leak can happen because of a bad seal, a cracked line or a failing gasket. Creation of an impact on other systems, such as Car Engine Repair or Suspension Repair, might happen if it is not taken care of promptly.

What If Your Car Has No Dipstick?

Certain modern cars are designed with sealed transmissions, and dipsticks are not available. A mechanic will have to use special equipment to determine the fluid level. Don’t take the risk by yourself—take it to a professional Auto Body Shop experienced in complex systems. Maintain your equipment regularly to stop damage from occurring.

Sticking to regular maintenance helps your transmission work properly. That includes:

  • Fluid changes are done as scheduled.
  • Filter replacements
  • Regular inspections

Scheduling maintenance and avoiding surprise costs are the main reasons why many drivers in Abu Dhabi choose a service contract.

Keep the Inside Clean, Too

While you protect the transmission with fluid, you should also clean the system’s interior. Airborne dust and dirt can reach and harm the gear systems in the cabin. Proper Car Detailing can both improve your car’s style and maintain its proper functioning.

Final Thoughts

Checking your automatic transmission fluid is a simple yet essential task to keep your vehicle running smoothly. It helps prevent transmission damage, improves performance, and extends the life of your car—making it a smart habit for every driver. For expert help, trusted maintenance, or a complete fluid check, Exotic Auto Services is always ready to assist with care that meets high standards.
